[The feed comes on to show Apollo in scrubs behind the front desk of the Azalea PokéCenter. It's been a slow day and he hasn't had very much to do besides stand there and think about the problem that the rain is hammering home. He hates to admit it, but it looks like he's stuck having to ask other humans for help on this one.]

Does anyone know how to build a shelter that's good for all the seasons? Ilex Forest isn't mountainous enough to have caves. I was thinking that digging some kind of burrow in a hill would work, but I don't know how to make a roof that would stay up and water wouldn't come through. I know there are mountains here, but do any of them have forests near them? If there's one like that it would be easier to just find a cave there than build a shelter.

I still need to stay for a while every so often to get more of that money stuff so I can buy food. I wish there was a way to get money without having to work in a town.

It's not like it stays in the next room. There are pipes and then it goes... well I don't know where it goes, but it goes somewhere.

Fires are nice sometimes, but wouldn't it be hard to read sometimes? And what about winter? Doesn't it ever get cold where you're from?

Whatever you leave outside eventually returns to the earth. I don't know what happens if you leave something inside. It might just sit there.

I don't know, I can't read. Grandpa never had any trouble reading by firelight though, so it must not be a problem.

It gets really cold in the winter, but I block up the entrance, keep a fire going all the time, and stay inside bundled in hides as much as I can.

I don't get why anyone would want to live in a town. Being outside all the time's way better.

I don't think... it actually stays inside. I think it gets piped to the sewer system, but I'm not really sure after that. Never really thought about it before, it's one of those things we kind of take for granted I think.

[The look on Rinoa's face at this news is priceless. It's by far worse than hearing "I'm used to living in a cave".]

Well, when you put it that way it's like how most people can't imagine why you'd want to live in a cave when you can live in a town. See?

Living in cities isn't a bad thing, there are people to visit, places to see, and a whole bunch of stuff to do.

It's on the map for Johto. I don't have a map for Kanto, so I don't know if there are any places to check there.

Why would it be hot? The name sounds like something that has a big pit in it. [He's thinking "mortar and pestle".]

Another reason to stay way from humans as much as I can. I always have to pick up garbage that humans leave behind when they come.

Going outside is simpler and I know where it goes.

I gather a lot of extra food while the weather's nicer and store it. Sometimes I have to go outside and hunt in the winter if I'm running low. It's a lot harder in the winter so I try not to have to. [Do you know what happens in the original story of the ant and the grasshopper, Rinoa? The grasshopper freezes to death. You've probably only heard the kid-friendly version that takes the force out of the moral, unlike him.]

Cities stink. Oil and other stuff I don't know. I can't smell the flowers and grass when I'm in them.

... ah! I was thinking of Cinnabar, then... I don't think I ever went to Mortar when I was over there...

. . . eh? Somehow, I get the feeling you're thinking of an entirely different meaning than what I'm referring to.

[He shrugs. It's not important enough to him to ask about.]

There's a lake marked on the map near it. I'll have to look around there next and see what it's like.

Oh, that place!

I just surfed over the tiny lake that was next to it. It probably spared my group a good week or two of travel time. Which was always a plus back then, considering my stamina was leagues above the rest of my party...

What's "surf"?

The move that lets you ride your Pokemon over water!

... why you need a move to let you do that, none of us will ever truly understand, but that's just the way things work.

I never thought of riding a Pokémon. I guess some of them are big enough to carry a human.

Is there one of those TM things that teaches it? Or do some Pokémon just know how to do it?

I see, would it not be easier to sleep in an inn during the rainy days? Ah, but weather can be so unpredictable...

I am afraid I could not offer much help other than to make good use of your Pokemon. They can allow you to do things that normal men cannot do.

I don't like staying in towns. They stink.

I don't think any of the ones traveling with me would be able to help very much, except maybe Sentret, but she's pretty small. [A pause before he thinks of something.] Is there one of those TM things that would let her dig through rock and dirt? Or maybe one that makes plants grow into a shelter?

[Oh how nice it would be to be able to buy a Secret Power TM in Route. Looks like he'll have to do this the hard(er) way.]

Technically it's an HM, but... yeah, you need to teach it to them. THat's part of what makes it so strange, really. Having to teach them how to let you ride them with a machine...

I've never tried teaching an animal anything before, but I probably wouldn't need a machine to do it anywhere else. Do you need a machine to ride them on land, too?

[A pause. It might be worthwhile to ask.]

Does the Goldenrod Department Store sell the TM or HM or whatever it is? What's the difference?

[ For someone who bought a lot of TMs for her older Pokemon, it's not surprising she remembers that. ]

There are some Pokemon large enough to provide shelter themselves.

It's not fair to blame that on everyone, it's not like every human litters you know.

[She doesn't say anything about that, but the look on her face clearly says "but going outside is gross".]

But it's important to learn things! Reading helps us learn about ourselves, the world around us, and... well everything! You need to learn to read or write, how else are you going to use your pokegear properly?

Some cities do smell pretty bad sometimes, but that doesn't mean they're all bad. Sometimes you lose one thing to gain another.

Yeah, oil and soap and smells I don't even know. It's so strong I can't tell apart the scents of grass and flowers when I'm in a town.

"Dig"? I might have to buy one the next time I pass through.

The ones traveling with me are all too small for that, so I'll have to build something myself. Besides, it seems mean to make one Pokémon sit in the rain just so everyone else can be dry.
