[The feed comes on to show Apollo in scrubs behind the front desk of the Azalea PokéCenter. It's been a slow day and he hasn't had very much to do besides stand there and think about the problem that the rain is hammering home. He hates to admit it, but it looks like he's stuck having to ask other humans for help on this one.]
Does anyone know how to build a shelter that's good for all the seasons? Ilex Forest isn't mountainous enough to have caves. I was thinking that digging some kind of burrow in a hill would work, but I don't know how to make a roof that would stay up and water wouldn't come through. I know there are mountains here, but do any of them have forests near them? If there's one like that it would be easier to just find a cave there than build a shelter.

I don't think... it actually stays inside. I think it gets piped to the sewer system, but I'm not really sure after that. Never really thought about it before, it's one of those things we kind of take for granted I think.
[The look on Rinoa's face at this news is priceless. It's by far worse than hearing "I'm used to living in a cave".]
You... you can't read? At all? [Reading is such a big thing in her life, the idea of not having it is awful.] Well we can fix that! No problem.
[She's not asking either, that's a "We're teaching you how to read, Mr" and she's not about to be dissuaded easily.]
If you stay inside all winter, what do you eat? [Because it's not like you can have a fridge if you have no power.]
Well, when you put it that way it's like how most people can't imagine why you'd want to live in a cave when you can live in a town. See?
Living in cities isn't a bad thing, there are people to visit, places to see, and a whole bunch of stuff to do.
Date: 2012-06-22 12:52 pm (UTC)Going outside is simpler and I know where it goes.
Grandpa tried to teach me, but I wasn't interested and he gave up. I'd rather be moving around than sitting in one place turning pages.
[Yeah, no. There's a reason why it takes so many years for schools to teach kids to read - if they're not interested it's hard to force them to learn.]
I gather a lot of extra food while the weather's nicer and store it. Sometimes I have to go outside and hunt in the winter if I'm running low. It's a lot harder in the winter so I try not to have to. [Do you know what happens in the original story of the ant and the grasshopper, Rinoa? The grasshopper freezes to death. You've probably only heard the kid-friendly version that takes the force out of the moral, unlike him.]
Cities stink. Oil and other stuff I don't know. I can't smell the flowers and grass when I'm in them.
Date: 2012-06-25 02:00 pm (UTC)[She doesn't say anything about that, but the look on her face clearly says "but going outside is gross".]
But it's important to learn things! Reading helps us learn about ourselves, the world around us, and... well everything! You need to learn to read or write, how else are you going to use your pokegear properly?
[But Apollo this stuff is important!! Why won't you cooperate?!?!]
Wouldn't your food go bad? [How does one operate without a fridge? It's a valid question?]
[Is he tired of her naive city girl questions yet?]
Some cities do smell pretty bad sometimes, but that doesn't mean they're all bad. Sometimes you lose one thing to gain another.
Date: 2012-06-25 11:35 pm (UTC)I learn things all the time without reading. You just have to pay attention to everything around you.
I'm using it right now just fine. [Though Danny had to show him how to use the map function and tell him what all the names on it were. And he still doesn't know how to get it to read text posts or Pokédex entries out loud, which would be helpful. Or really, anything other than the video function, and that only because his Spearow happened to know.
Because his life up until now has shown him that he can do everything he wants or needs to do without needing to be able to read? ...It feels weird to write a defense of remaining illiterate...]
I dry the meat. Or smoke it. If it's a really cold winter I can just leave it out somewhere where animals can't get it and it doesn't go bad.
[Not tired, just kind of confused that they're having a discussion about such "obvious" things.]
If I have to lose something I want to get something I want in return.
Date: 2012-06-27 07:20 am (UTC)But with reading you can learn about things that you'd never be able to see!
Sure, you can use video fine, but what about text? If you can't read and you can't write, there's no way you can do that, right? [She doesn't even know that the pokegear can read things out loud, she hasn't exactly bothered to read all of the instructions just yet.]
[She's going to find some reason to show him that reading is important somehow. Just watch her!]
Dry or smoked? Wouldn't that get boring after a while? [Oh no Rinoa, don't start on the topic of food, this conversation will go on forever if you do.]
I'm sure there are plenty of things in a city, even for you. [She's just not sure what yet.]
Date: 2012-06-27 11:19 pm (UTC)Why would I need to know about things I'm never going to see?
The way I'm using it now is good enough.
[She's welcome to try. If he sees a reason he'll learn, but it hasn't been more than an occasional annoyance so far.]
Yeah, it doesn't taste as good as freshly-cooked meat, but there's no other way to keep it edible over the winter, so I put up with it. I can still hunt in the other three seasons.
How do people in towns keep their food from going bad? [Too late?]
Like what?
Date: 2012-06-29 05:48 am (UTC)Say the first ten dark type pokemon you meet are all mean, attacking everyone and everything that gets to close. Would you just assume that ever dark type pokemon is like that?
How do you know you aren't going to see them? I bet you never thought you'd end up on a strange world either.
[She's stubborn too, she'll find a way. Watch her send him books on pokemon anatomy and how to better care for them or something in the future.]
We have special appliances that keep food cold or freeze it depending on where you put it. That way food stays fresh longer and we don't have to worry about food going bad quite so much anymore.
.... I don't know yet, because I still don't know you very well. [At least she can admit this.]
Date: 2012-06-29 12:53 pm (UTC)If I see something new then I'll watch and try to learn about it. Unless I think I'm going to see something there's no point in learning about it.
[He'll defeat her clever plan by asking someone to read it to him or just ask his Pokémon directly how they want to be treated, like he does already.]
Those would be useful, but Grandpa didn't have any of those, so we had to keep food from going bad a different way.
Date: 2012-07-01 11:47 am (UTC)[They're both so stubborn, they could probably argue about this forever.]
[What? No! Cheating is bad, Apollo. Stop that!]
They come in really handy. [Then she realizes something, important question time.] What about music?
[She finds it hard to imagine life without music.]
Date: 2012-07-01 04:06 pm (UTC)[It would be so much worse if this was the main series Apollo. XD At least this one is being calmly stubborn.]
You mean all that annoying noise that's everywhere here? What about it?
[He would love a life without music again. Being here has basically destroyed any possible interest he might have had in it.]
Date: 2012-07-03 09:02 pm (UTC)[Yes, she's really going to pull this one.]
If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one around to hear it. Does it still make a sound?
[Oh Rinoa, that's not an analogy that's going to work really well here.]
Music doesn't always sound like this, it can sound like a lot of things.
[She'll be so sad to hear that, and probably find that just as tragic as living in a cave.]
Date: 2012-07-03 11:07 pm (UTC)There's always someone around hear it. It wouldn't be a forest if there was just one tree.
[The absurdity of that question to him just made him forget to respond to the "music" thing. Good job, Rinoa. XD;]
Date: 2012-07-04 04:12 am (UTC)No one said there was only one tree, it's a forest. That means there are a lot of trees.
[The music thing would have heart her poor heart anyway, it's for the best.]

Date: 2012-07-14 12:35 am (UTC)[Though if she's honest, she doesn't really know what the point of that saying even is.]
Date: 2012-07-14 04:52 am (UTC)[Because to him to whole saying is stupid.]
Date: 2012-07-16 06:17 am (UTC)[For a minute there she almost can't remember, but then it all comes rushing back.]
It means that just because you've never seen or heard someone do something, it doesn't mean they haven't done it.
Date: 2012-07-16 06:33 am (UTC)[You could have saved this thread 8 tags if you had, Rinoa. XP]
It doesn't mean they have, either.
Date: 2012-07-17 07:43 pm (UTC)[Now where's the fun in that?]
But that doesn't mean that they haven't, so maybe you shouldn't be quite so quick to judge them. See?
Date: 2012-07-17 09:32 pm (UTC)[Don't know what all those words mean or why languages have them? Both.
Think of the... digital trees... that used!]
I'll believe it when I see it for myself. That's the only way to know for sure.
Date: 2012-07-19 07:04 am (UTC)[Rinoa... he wasn't agreeing with you. Stop that.]
[There are no digital trees, you can't fool her.]
Then you'd better keep watching, because I'll prove it to you myself if I have to.
