Guess it's just something I never really thought about. Where I'm from, people usually wear shoes to get around unless they're hanging around at home or lazing on the beach.
I mean, a part of it's definitely insulation-- they keep feet dry and warm, especially if you've got socks to go with them. Open toed shoes are a little different, though, and you see a lot of those on the islands. They're definitely easier to slip into and out of, but for running? They're way too flimsy for my liking.
